How to become more patient? “Patience is a virtue.” As the famous phrase goes, keeping calm and controlling anxiety is essential to seeking emotional balance (physical and mental) that brings us well-being and quality of life. In the dictionary definition, patience is a virtue that consists in enduring ills, hardships, and inconveniences without revolt; or complaint, tolerance, quality of someone who waits calmly and serenely for what takes time, perseverance in carrying out or continuing a job, despite the difficulties.

In other words, patience is associated with tolerating unpleasant aspects in the most diverse situations, from relationships with other people to personal and occupational projects. Here are some ways to be patient. Check out!

Step by step to work on our patience

1 – Self-knowledge

To be more patient, you need to know yourself, identify your thoughts, and listen to your body. The ideas that go through our heads alter our emotional state and can often be distorted.

Ideas such as “I can’t do this task,” “other people always want to harm me,” “I’m weak” can appear in our minds, making us angry or impatient with some situation or person. Moreover, it usually distorts, highlighting negative aspects of a problem to the detriment of positive ones.

Finding out what thoughts arise before an emotional outburst or episodes of impatience can help you anticipate these reactions and avoid them. In the same sense, emotions have physiological responses. For example: when we are angry or impatient, we can feel the heartbeat faster, muscle tension, clenched jaw, among others. Therefore, identifying these sensations can also help us notice our emotional change and prevent impatience.

2 – Acceptance

Since patience refers to the tolerance of evils and difficulties, accepting that social relationships, personal goals; and the achievement of goals have unpleasant moments, feelings; and thoughts can help us cope with them. Moreover, if we assume that these unpleasant situations are part of a transitory process; as the pleasant ones, we can have more patience to endure them.

Attention: This does not mean we need to enjoy these moments, but we must accept that they exist and are part of our lives.

3 – Meditate

Mindfulness meditation focuses on the transience of experiences and observing our inner experience (thoughts and feelings), free from judgment, which can help a lot to be more patient. Regular meditation practice helps identify; and accept sensations and thought, making us deal with them differently and thus helping to increase patience.

Exercises of relaxation and breathing help reduce the physiological sensations caused by our emotional state of anger, irritation, and stress, leading to impatience. Using these resources in moments of high emotional intensity helps us regulate this experience.
