A podcast is a radio program broadcast over the Internet. You can share a customizable audio file on popular websites, blogs, and platforms like iTunes, Spotify, or SoundCloud. This format takes the entertainment world by storm as audio can be downloaded, shared, and easy to listen to. We’re talking about a series of audio episodes, usually focused on a specific topic or area.

Many wonders if this means going back to radio. It certainly has to do with sound reproduction. However, the podcast brings together the best of radio and the Internet: giving wings to the imagination with the novelty that the listener has decision-making power.

You can decide when to listen, how many times, repeat if you like, pause, come back later or choose the platform you want to listen to. Many have gone even further and have video versions to win over different audiences.

Podcasting arose from the need to produce background content. It entertains, educates, and inspires the listener when performing routine activities. Podcast history

The term podcasting was first heard in 2004 in ‘The Guardian’ written by journalist Ben Hammersly. He reflected on a possible boom in ham radio, arguing that all the ingredients for its success were there. It was cheap, popular; you could listen to MP3 players, easy to produce.

At the start of the new millennium, the term podcasting didn’t even exist. However, the advent of various technologies, the accessibility of recording equipment, faster access to the Internet, and the growth of on-demand communities that want specialized content have created an entirely new medium.

In 2005, large companies began to detect this opportunity. Again, apple led the way with iTunes 4.9, the first update with native podcast support. In fact, in 2005, George W. Bush became the first president to have a weekly podcast speech. Interestingly, that same year the term podcast was declared word of the year by the New Oxford American Dictionary.

The medium’s popularity grew with Ricky Gervais, who set a Guinness record for becoming the most downloaded podcast, with no fewer than 250,000 downloads per episode.

In 2013, demand was undeniable, and Apple announced that it had reached one billion podcast subscribers.

How does it work?

So, thanks to the Internet and its instant connection, podcasting has become a preferred media for users. Just as blogging and social media allowed almost anyone with a computer to become a reporter, podcasting allows anyone to act as a talk show host or announcer.

The podcast combines the freedom of blogging with digital audio technology to create an almost infinite content supply. Unlike Internet radio, users do not need to tune in to a specific broadcast. Instead, they can download any podcast they like.

Listening is effortless. You only need a smartphone. Chances are you already have a podcast app built into your operating system. Another option is to visit the directories or web pages of the online podcast or the company that produces it, as they are usually free.

About free, an interesting fact is an increase in listeners’ interest in payment methods, as 68.4% of the audience would pay to enjoy advanced features, and 54.6% would pay to have access to exclusive content.

This is in line with an extended behavior for the rest of the world since, according to data from Edison Research, in the United States, 47% of listeners subscribe to paid audios, more than double in 2015. The recordings are hosted on a web where they can be downloaded and mostly played live.

How to make one?

1 – Creativity is the key
